Garage With Screen Door in Use - Are Garage Door Screens Worth It?

Thinking about turning your garage into more than just a place to park? A garage door screen could be the answer. It lets in fresh air and light while keeping bugs out, making your garage a better place to work, play, or relax. Plus, it works with your existing door, adding value and comfort without the hassle.

Keep reading to learn the perks of installing a motorized garage door screen, how they work and whether they are worth the investment.

Why a Motorized Garage Door Screen?

Like the basement and laundry rooms of the past– once ignored and overlooked, garages are receiving lots of attention when it comes to personalizing and maximizing your living space. Whether your garage is your vehicle’s home or your workshop, your workout space or additional living space, you can add value and comfort to your garage with a motorized power screen. Designed to work with your existing overhead door so you can enjoy fresh air and an indoor/outdoor flow while you use your garage.

In today’s housing market, homeowners understand the value of maximizing their home’s untapped potential. Upgrading a home’s current square footage can increase the enjoyability and practicality of the home, and may even increase its property value. So, what can a motorized garage door screen add to your home?

Benefits of Motorized Garage Door Screens

A Sustainable Design Choice

Motorized garage door screens provide fresh air flow and natural light without drawing on nonrenewable energy sources. Good for you and good for the planet! Adequate ventilation is very important for many activities that typically take place in a garage: automotive and woodworking projects to name just two.

Keep Critters Out While Letting Fresh Air In!

A retractable motorized screen on your garage can discourage unwanted insects and animals from seeking shelter indoors. This is a bonus for both urban and rural dwellers, as small animals are very adept at making homes in any environment.  Keeping bugs and dust out of your garage space makes it all the more appealing and comfortable, too.

A Statement of Style

With a low profile, clean lines, and many colours to choose from, a motorized garage door screen can add to the curb appeal of your home. Your motorized screen can also provide your garage with variable degrees of privacy, depending on the density and colour of the mesh you choose.

Installation of a Motorized Garage Door Screen

At Screen Experts, each Rainier Power Screen we install is custom-built to fit your garage’s exact measurements. Once ordered, your choice of housing shape and colour, as well as mesh density and colour, will be assembled into a kit that our team of qualified installers will fix in place for you. You will have an opportunity to see and handle examples of the housing and mesh options so you can choose what works best in your specific situation. Our expert installers are happy to answer any questions you have about your power screen.

Each Rainier Power Screen is connected to a power source at the site of installation. They are powered by remote control for added convenience. They are held securely in place along two vertical tracks situated on the sides of the garage door opening and feature a sturdy hem bar with reinforced edges at the bottom. This adds to the screen’s wind resistance and gives a smooth, no-sag profile to the mesh.

How Does a Retractable Power Screen Work With My Existing Overhead Garage Door?

In most cases, the housing of a Rainier Power Screen will sit on the outside of the garage, either within the jamb of the garage door opening or on the face of it. The overhead door will never come into contact with the motorized screen or its guide tracks. When not in use, the mesh will be stored rolled up within the housing. With several standard colours and custom options available, you’re sure to find an option that will work with your home’s design.

Important Tips to Consider When Choosing a Motorized Retractable Screen

Here are some additional frequently asked questions and tips about installing a motorized screen:

What Is the Best Kind of Mesh to Choose?

This depends on the purpose of your power screen. Do you want to increase airflow? A less dense mesh (as low as 55% density) may be a good choice. Do you want to optimize privacy? A denser mesh may be best. Your installer will provide samples of different mesh densities as well as colours. Did you know a darker mesh is easier to see out of? The most popular choice of density is between 80 and 90%. However, you can even choose a solid, clear vinyl for optimal sunlight and no airflow.

Do I Need An Electrical Outlet Nearby?

Each Rainier Power Screen plugs into an electrical outlet and is operated by a remote control device. Having an electrical outlet nearby allows for less of the cord to be visible, but this is a choice for the homeowner to make.

What Does the Housing Look Like?

A Rainier Power Screen comes with an option of rounded or square housing, depending on your own preference. Each housing and track is made of powder-coated aluminum and is mounted securely with a low profile. The size of the housing varies from three inches to five inches, depending on the length and height of the mesh housed within it. Your installer will show you examples of the housing sizes and shapes at your free consultation.

How Much Does a Motorized Garage Door Screen Cost?

If you are ready to upgrade your garage space and add functionality to your outdoor living area, a Rainier Power Screen may be right for you. A Screen Experts installer will be happy to provide you with a complimentary estimate, but it’s helpful to know the starting price for a motorized screen to cover a single-car garage door opening is approximately $3500.
